Clay Stock Bricks

Why Our Clay Stock Bricks are a Sound Investment for Your Next Building Project

Contractors, builders, and project managers should pay special attention to the building materials that they use. The materials chosen will often be determined by budgetary and environmental factors. Temperature and moisture can cause different reactions in different building materials. These reaction forces can cause movement, which result in stress within the structure. This can result in cracks, plaster crazing, and may even weaken the overall structure. For this reason, it is important to choose a building material that handles all conditions well, without requiring major maintenance.

For the sake of the building’s integrity, and to ensure damage and potential mitigation costs are kept to a minimum, we strongly recommend that you consider our clay stock bricks for your project. Unlike masonry materials, clay bricks show very little movement when exposed to moisture during wet weather – usually no more than around 1 mm per every 10 m of wall. Clay bricks are fired at extremely high temperatures during manufacture and this is when all the moisture is extracted from the brick. Thereafter, the bricks typically only expand once after the firing process and that is by around 0 to 0,2%.

South Africa is quite unique in terms of temperature extremes. With hot summer days and sometimes sub-zero winter nights, thermal expansion and contraction of structures are a reality. With rain, frost, condensation, and damp, you have to put careful consideration in choosing the right building material. Clay stock bricks experience minimal contraction and expansion. If the brick is manufactured with the correct mix formulation and fired correctly, the thermal movement will be far less than many other building material types.

While clay bricks offer these benefits already, they are a fairly inexpensive building product too. You can also expect the structure to be waterproof, easy to maintain, and exhibiting excellent great thermal characteristics. On average, clay brick structures can last around 100 years, but it is not surprising to find clay brick buildings that are more than 500 years old. When properly constructed and maintained, clay bricks can realistically last a lifetime.

A few more benefits of investing in clay stock bricks:

  • Clay bricks contribute to impressive structural strength. These bricks have a high load-bearing capacity with a minimum of 7 MPa for most standard varieties, up to 50 MPa.
  • These bricks are fire-resistant and will not spread fire. This is because they are fired at such high temperatures during the manufacturing process.
  • Clay bricks are made from dense materials that can withstand flooding, hail, and lightning.
  • These bricks are environmentally friendly, as they are constructed from sustainable materials that can be recycled, and require minimal maintenance.
